The University of Tennessee, Knoxville’s accounting Ph.D. program provides qualified candidates with the intellectual and professional capabilities needed to pursue academic careers at major universities. The doctoral program is offered to a relatively small, yet highly qualified and motivated, group of students who are devoted to achieving academic excellence. Admission to the program is extremely competitive. Development of a close working relationship between faculty and students within the department and across the college’s business disciplines is emphasized.
The program is structured, full-time, and research-oriented. It starts in July with a mathematics “Boot Camp” before classes begin in the fall. Students complete two to three years of coursework followed by two years working on their dissertation.
Throughout the program, students are expected to collaborate with others on writing papers. To facilitate this process, students must complete a paper during their second year and are encouraged to begin work on their research agenda during the early years of their program. After students complete their coursework, they must pass their comprehensive examinations before beginning work on their dissertation. Students may choose to specialize in financial accounting, auditing, tax, corporate governance, or systems.
