Jack Kiger
Professor Emeritus of Accounting

JACK E. KIGER was the Warren L. Slagle Professor of Accounting at the University of Tennessee before retiring in 2011.  After earning an undergraduate degree in accounting at the University of North Carolina in 1963, he became a CPA and worked as an auditor for Peat, Marwick, Mitchell and Co. (now KPMG) for four years.  He taught corporate finance at the University of Alabama during the year he earned an MBA. He earned a PhD in Accountancy at the University of Missouri in 1971 where he taught financial accounting.   After serving five years on the faculty at the University of Georgia where he taught financial accounting and auditing, he joined the faculty at the University of Tennessee in 1976 as Department Head.  He served as Department Head for nine years and initiated the formation of the Accounting Advisory Roundtable, the annual Accounting Day, and the Accounting Excellence Fund Endowment.  At UT, he taught financial accounting as well as undergraduate and graduate auditing. Throughout his career, he promoted internships for students and recruited firms to provide internships.  

Dr. Kiger’s research was published in the Journal of Accounting Research, The Accounting Review, The CPA Journal, The Internal Auditor, and numerous other journals.   He also is a co-author of two textbooks.  He served as a member of the Editorial Board of The Accounting Review and also as the Editor for the Education Research Section of The Accounting Review

In professional organizations, Dr. Kiger served in numerous roles including National Director of Chapter of Activities of Beta Alpha Psi (1979-1982), National President of Beta Alpha Psi (1982-83), member of the Accounting Accreditation Standards Committee of the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business (1983-86), and member of the Minority Recruitment and Equal Opportunity Committee of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (1987-90).
